Nanaimo Airport

Nanaimo Airport (YCD) serves Nanaimo, BC, as the gateway to Central Vancouver Island. Like many regional airports, YCD operates with a lean team where staff handle multiple responsibilities - managing separate systems for displays, audio, and flight data simply wasn't practical with the resources available.

Simpleway's Airport CX platform was implemented in 2025, consolidating FIDS, public address, and flight data into a single platform across 26 screens. Flight data feeds directly into both display and announcement workflows, keeping flight lists current without manual intervention, and display content management is straightforward enough for non-technical staff to handle day-to-day.

The PA system runs entirely on nnounce devices - no expensive audio cores were required, keeping infrastructure costs practical for a regional airport. micnode mini3 zone-button units at check-in counters handle live paging, while micnode2h touchscreen stations at the gates give agents quick access to prepared boarding announcements configured by Simpleway's support team. Background music was integrated and leveled as part of the same implementation, so music, announcements, and paging sit at the right balance across the terminal without requiring separate management.

Visual paging synchronizes announcement text on screens with every audio broadcast, ensuring passengers who are deaf or hard of hearing receive the same information as all other travelers - an important requirement under Canadian federal accessibility regulations. Text-to-Speech delivers announcements in both English and French.

The implementation was completed efficiently. Simpleway's team brought real-world airport experience to the project, translating that directly into YCD's specific requirements rather than starting from scratch. Post-implementation, having one vendor accountable for displays, audio, and flight data has meaningfully simplified operations for a team where every hour counts.
